With the weather forecast looking a little nicer here in SA i thought it would be a prime time to get the Haines Prowler out and go drifting for squid, hitting the ramp at 6am was the plan as the temp was meant to peak at 42 degrees. We had picked out some nice ground the night before and headed straight for it. The wind was blowing around 15-20knts from the North so the plan was to do some quicker drifts in the shallower water before heading out to deeper water as the wind dropped later in the morning.
My choice of gear was the Samurai Reaction Squid M, Megabass Dart Crew in a few different colours and a 2500 sized reel. This come to prove a deadly combo for the local squid, the Squid M would have to be one of the lightest rods I have ever picked up, with its stiffer action and length it made flicking the smaller 2.5-3.5g jags out a breeze without loosing any feel to the jag connected on the other end. With the boat sitting in 1.8m of water we started out first drift. It wasn’t long and the first squid was in the boat.
We continued to drift a line of about 300m long, with the first drift bagging us 9 squid. We found the deeper we drifted and with the wind still blowing hard we needed to slow the drift once the water got to around 4m. We headed back to where we started drifting on the first run, like the first drift it didnt take long, bagging another 11 squid on the second drift, this time as soon as we hit around 2.5m of water we deployed the sea anchor, this slowed us down enough to allow our jigs to sit within 1ft of the ribbon weed. With 20 squid already in the bag and only being allowed to catch 30 for our combined bag limits we went back over the same area once again. This was our 3rd and final drift, picking up our final 10 squid. 30 squid for the morning in quick succession. If its a squid rod you are after make sure you check the Samurai Reaction squid rods, they come in the Squid M and Squid L. These rods will catch you more squid.
