I recently had my second visit to the much lauded Norfolk Island. My trip was to hopefully land some big Kings but yet again the weather turned against us and the fishing was hard and well earned.
Our trip was for 10 days and the majority of it was spent fishing in the only spot available. We cranked lures and poppers but the only real effective way of catching the big fish was on live bait. I decided to take the two Samurai Pop rods matched up with a heavy duty thread-line reel. It worked out very well as the bigger Kings would bury deep quickly but using this set up gave me the leverage needed to keep those fish out of the bommies and rock structure close in to the ledge.
The bigger Samurai worked wonders in dragging the double figure fish out of danger zones and up onto the rocks. I have since decided to use this set up for all my LBG as opposed to an overhead set up. I’m no stranger to big fish in and around the rocks and I can really recommend this set up for big Kings.
Use a good quality mono of about 50lb with a healthy 150lb leader. Also use a size 9/0 Gamakatsu Live Bait hook that will be bridle rigged to a good sized live bait. Sit this about 6 ft under a squid float and just wait for the action to begin!
