One of the best things about visiting a place like Albany Island is the chance to do something different if the conditions don’t meet expectations. For some of us that meant a walk to the other side of the island to fish a sheltered beach with light spin and fly rods. Meanwhile the rest of us put the fishing gear down for a day and headed a mere 6kms up the coast with Hamish from CY charters to the tip of Australia. We were dropped off about a 500m walk through scrub from the tip itself and it is quite unforgiving terrain. I really don’t remember Hamish mentioning neeeding shoes, but he assures me he did.
The tip itself is an achievement many will not have the chance to get to and I would have to say it will go on my top ten list of things to do up here. We had a brief fish in this pristine and beautiful environment but unfortunately were outwitted by the resident coral trout.
Meanwhile back on the island two of the crew, Dan and Paul, headed over to fish a small beach with Albi, the dog as guide. Albi did well when he wasnt chasing the fish away by puting them onto some small Queenfish on the Atomic Semi Hardz flicked out on light Samurai rods such as the 201 and 302. Dan also managed a giant herring on a saltwater fly.
The afternoon was spent relaxing with a cold one as we watched the sun go down over the mainland, while the others got stuck into the resident fish off the wharf using light spin gear and fresh squid , spun up on Megabass jigs and fish baits.
